Evoker Featured in Surface Area Magazine

The creative minds behind Peel Magazine and Robots Will Kill have combined their talents and launched a new print magazine called Surface Area. The first issue released yesterday and not only is Evoker featured in it, but as a total surprise he’s featured on the cover. Issue #1 is 40 pages, 1/2 size, b&w offset printed, poly bagged, limited to 250 copies, includes approximately 12 stickers and can be purchased here.

Friends With Benefits invited some of our favorite artists to show new work as well as collaborate with members of Project SF for a exhibition at Boston’s Distillery Gallery. It was standing room only for most of the evening as some of Boston’s most talented creatives and entrepreneurs stopped in to check out the show.

Thanks to all the artists who helped make this exhibition a success and the staff at The Distillery Gallery for making it happen.

Nature Was Here

I was really happy I got to work on a collaboration with my good friend Peter Pracilio for Friends With Benefits at the Distillery Gallery in South Boston.

Our piece, Nature Was Here, incorporates Peter’s sculpture and my drawings to create a narrative wildlife habitat populated by the vandalous visages of animals long gone from the now industrial are. We has been talking for years about doing a project together and it was cool to see something finally take shape. I think the challenges of painting this particular spot in the gallery really added to the concept of these animals being the artists in question.

Thanks to Scott Chasse and Pat Falco for all their work getting this show together.

Space Invaders: Peter Pracilio

I met Peter Pracilio back in 2005 at one of those random loft parties in Bushwick. You know the kind… BYOB, deejay, chicks with name plate necklaces and attitudes.

When we met he was a friend of a friend. A few 40s and a couple of sessions around the dinner table later he was my favorite drum circle rapper and would eventually become one of my most valued friends in NYC. Sometimes during my 6 years in Brooklyn I would fall off creatively, but seeing Peter’s in studio work ethic always set me back on my path.

I’m happy to say Peter is not only a friend, homie, brother and fellow drum circle emcee, he’s now a collaborator as well.

This month the Distillery Gallery is hosting a cool little show curated by the members of Project SF themselves…called “Friends With Benefits“. The concept, developed and pitched by Gregory Burdett of Project SF, was for each of the members of Project SF to pick an artist outside of the group to collaborate with on one new piece. Gregs’ awesome concept is an effort to get back to the roots of Project SF…collaboration!

For me it seemed like the perfect opportunity to work with someone whose work I admired but I didn’t know all that well… and enter Preys UPS.

I’ve known of Preys for a long time now… Been a fan of his graffiti and all of the UPS crew since I first started paying attention to them while I was living in RI in the 90s. He has been pushing the boundaries of traditional graffiti and letterforms since before it was cool. I didn’t get to meet and chill with him until I went to Miami for Art Basel last year.. only to realize he lived down the street in Boston. Funny how that happens….

Anyway… Preys and I made a painting together…and he made a few more of his own. They will all be on display along with several other amazing collaborative projects at the Distillery Gallery THIS THURSDAY!

While working on Friends With Benefits I got to meet up with the Notorious P.A.T. aka Pat Falco.

According to his equations, Pablo Picasso produced 1.5 pieces of artwork a day during his lifetime. With that in mind, Pat Falco has been producing at least 2 pieces of art a day… in effect beating Picasso.

This dude is about to explode…If you haven’t heard already he has his first major solo show opening this Saturday at Woodward Gallery in NYC. It is not to be missed.

I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Kenji closely over the last 5 or so years and i am always beyond impressed with everything he does. His dedication and passion for his artwork, as well as his humble nature and kindness have made a lasting impression on me. So, I am thrilled to see him getting the attention and recognition he deserves. If your in NYC this weekend be sure to check out the opening, and if not the exhibition will be up until July!!..so you have no excuses.

So I finally got to paint SPACE on a massive wall. It was awesome! Seeing the effects of the colors playing off each other on such a large surface was amazing and I was stoked to get to work on something this large with my pals in Project SF.

I recently painted CrossFit in the Fenway/Kenmore Sq. area with friend and artist Dana Woulfe. We had a blast, and we’re both psyched to be able to paint their new spot.

Project SF just recently painted live at Northeastern University for their annual Spring Fest. This is the 6th year that Project SF was asked to participate. This is always a fun project and a great time working with the crew.

Lastly, Nick Z and I painted for the great folks on Newbury Street in part with the grand opening of the Vibram‘s first US store. More photos and video to come…thanks to MrNvr.

Got an opportunity to do a mural for the New York Red Bulls last month with my man Stephen Holding at the home stadium in New York (Jersey). Arranged by the amazing Lot F we blazed this out over a weekend, half done in prep and the rest done live the day of their opening match.

Project SF X North Eastern University – Springfest 2012

Last week, some of the Project SF artists got together to paint a mural for Northeastern’s annual Springfest. This year’s theme was the Husky Games as curated by Mr. Never who put his interpretive spin on it.

Kenji Nakayama solo exhibition at Woodward Gallery

Announcing the first, New York solo exhibition by Japanese born and Boston-based Artist Kenji Nakayama. Simply entitled Kenji Nakayama, this must-see exhibition will be the most extensive presentation of his art to date, featuring photorealistic, hand-cut stencil, spray enamel, acrylic and mixed media paintings

Nakayama’s dedication and work ethic is unprecedented and very well respected. A mechanical engineer by formal education, Kenji Nakayama made a significant and resolute life change in 2004 moving from his home in Hokkaido, Japan. Bringing his cultural heritage to the United States, Nakayama incorporates Japanese and American influences within traditional sign painting techniques.

Kenji became involved with street art to document and respond to his surrounding environment, and as a method to capture significant moments in his daily life. His elaborate process involves crafting original, hand-cut, multi-layer stencils which become one complete image when illuminated with colorful spray enamel. This deeply personal technique serves as a diary from start to finish. In the studio, each intricately cut stencil painting often takes months to complete combining hours of concentration with a spiritualistic and meditative-like disposition.

Soon after Kenji’s arrival to the States, he met Director John Woodward and was challenged with the opportunity to paint the outdoor wall on their Project Space. This was followed by an invitation to exhibit another large scale installation in the Bank of America, SoHo. People were in awe of Kenji’s complex murals. The public continues to show great support by embracing this Artist for his quiet determination, skill and exciting new contribution to our culture.

Kenji Nakayama left his homeland driven to develop and master high levels of detail with an intense discipline in his art. Kenji describes, “My process is like dust. Each little grain and speck adds up, and soon becomes a mountain.”

ESSENTIAL EROTICA :: 3.31.12

I was thrilled to be asked to exhibit at ESSENTIAL EROTICA 2012. This massive group show was held at the Jinn Gallery, a colossal 14,000 square foot gallery at Broadway and Houston in NoHo. I met some great people including photographer Victor Spinelli, documentary filmmaker and video production artist Danny DiMeo, NYC-based artist Light Weight, and photographer/illustrator Jaime Filomio. Plus got to witness the incredible contortionist stylings of Natasha King, and rocked out ’til dawn to the sounds of Andrew Vogt ( Verboten ) with the ace homie known only as EVAQ.

Also sold 2 of my 3 pieces and earned a wall commission, which was an incredible way to kick off a truly amazing night! Thanks to Gigi Gueorguieva, Ze Vaz and everyone else who made this amazing event possible.

Once again..Kenji Nakayama and I will be showing at Lot F in Boston. This time the opening is April 6th…. TONIGHT! Yes..I realize I’m a little late on this post… ( i hope you “liked” me on Facebook to keep up with my news and events!!) so to make up for the late notice I’m releasing one of my favorite new works from the show.

Much of this work was done directly after my trip to Art Basel working on the MetalWoulfe experiment…and you can probably see some of the influences in this one. The entire body of work is based on letterforms but I’m interested in pushing it into abstraction and building the same energetic compositions and forms I was exploring in the Splash series.

Anyway…Here is one of my favorites from the show.
